Welcome to That Hangry Gurl!
I'm so glad you're here! I'm Nikki, the blogger, photographer, and recipe developer behind That Hangry Gurl. In my little corner of the internet, you'll find easy-to-follow recipes that take 45 minutes or less to make. My goal is to share delicious recipes that are approachable to make, require simple ingredients, and won't have you spending hours in the kitchen.
I live in Los Angeles with my husband, Jarell. I work full-time as a senior producer and personality for an entertainment website and TV show. My life is fast-paced, so I started That Hangry Gurl in 2019 because I wanted to share tasty, healthier recipes with people who are busy just like me.
The Covid-19 Pandemic
When Covid hit in 2020, restaurants were forced to shut down or limit the amount of orders they could handle with limited staff. Cooking at home quickly became standard for so many people, but they had no idea where to begin. Plus, with remote working and schooling, we all had our hands full.
My easy to follow recipes have helped so many families put dinner on the table quickly after a long day. And my simple lunches have helped so many working professionals eat balanced lunches while working from home. Now that things are getting back to some sort of normalcy, I hope my recipes continue to be used in so many households.
My past eating habits
Here's a little background about my terrible past eating habits. When my life would get too busy, I would sacrifice eating healthy foods. I would be on the go so much, that I would stop and grab fast food, or go hours without eating. Then when I finally got to eat, I would overeat quickly! So, when it was time for me to get back on track, I would be super restrictive of what I would eat. Sometimes eating nothing to "lose weight".
I realized that what I was doing wasn't healthy or sustainable and that I could still lead a semi-healthy lifestyle with a busy schedule. In order to stay on track, I find it helpful to plan out all my meals for the week. Some weeks that means actually cooking/prepping all my meals on Sunday.
Some weeks that means just knowing what meals I will need to make each day. I only go to the grocery store one time, because if I had to go more than that, I would resort back to my old ways of just grabbing something quick on the way home from work.
I hope to make That Hangry Gurl your new go-to for simple, balanced recipes!
The way I approach food now is with nonrestrictive eating habits. So on that Hangry Gurl, you will find a mix of healthier and indulgent recipes, as well as some delicious cocktails and hearty crockpot meals. Most importantly you will find a balance that fits your needs without having to spend hours making it.
